Policy Influencing and Advocacy

This program is one of the most critical facets that can bring long-term change to our community in our rapidly growing city and country. As an organization, we fight hard to be included in critical conversations on policy changes in all tiers of government, including the municipal, provincial, and federal administrations. This is because policymakers and discussion circles have excluded the black voice for decades, leading to ill-informed discriminatory policies being approved. Within both African and other minority groups, East Africans are the least represented and accounted for, despite the large community.

These amendments have long-term and short-term negative effects on criminal justice, housing, education, health, and employment. Through active policy influencing and advocacy on behalf of the East African community, the Immigrant Outreach Society hopes to create positive institutional changes that will result in a brighter future for our people and future generations within the beautiful city of Calgary.
