Porridge With Love

Sleep deprivation and increased stress inhibit the mother’s ability to effectively regulate her emotions. Without a proper support system, these factors can grow into something more serious: a sense of tearfulness, loss of joy and appetite, and, at the extreme end, psychosis and suicidal thoughts.

For recent refugees, these experiences are further exacerbated by resettlement stress and a lack of community. Immigrant Outreach Society began the Porridge With Love initiative to help expecting refugee mothers who are experiencing mental health crises and isolation. It targets newcomer single mothers and families.

Through this initiative, we hope to create a social network of people from the community to support mothers during and after pregnancy. This initiative has successfully supported new mothers in embarking on the journey of motherhood with greater confidence.
